SAFFORD — Arizona Department of Public Safety is investigating a shooting involving two Safford Police officers.

The incident occurred Tuesday, July 18, at about 10 a.m.  Officers responded to the 1200 block of 12th Avenue following reports of two men arguing.

Upon arrival, the officers reported seeing Douglas Van Ramm, of Graham County, holding a hand gun. Ignoring multiple commands to drop the weapon, Van Ramm reportedly pointed the gun at one of the responding officers. That’s when two other officers opened fire, striking Van Ramm an undisclosed number of times.

Van Ramm was transported to Mt. Graham Regional Medical Center and reports indicate the injuries he sustained were not fatal.

Safford was assisted by Graham County Sheriff’s Office and Thatcher Police, and initial reports indicate Van Ramm had threatened a Safford Utilities worker with the gun prior to the arrival of law enforcement.

Identities of the officers involved in the shooting have not yet been released.

Roadways in the area of 9th Street and 12th Avenue will be closed for an undetermined amount of time during the ongoing investigation.
