A man called the Sheriff’s office Tuesday and said that his son found a handgun in the bushes near Cactus Road and Highway 191 in Safford. The man turned the gun over to deputies when they arrived. The man said that his son found the firearm in the bushes the day before. The gun was identified as a rusted, ASTRA A-70 .40 caliber chrome handgun.
Authorities ran the serial number, which did not show the gun as stolen. The reporting party also turned over a spent casing that he said was in the chamber. The gun did not have a magazine and appeared to have been outside for an extended period of time. At the time of this report authorities were running a trace on the firearm’s serial number.
