SAFFORD — The Safford Lions Club is looking for those who wish to help on an international mission.

The Safford Lions Club will be performing vision screenings in Cananea and Bacoachi, Sonora, Mexico, and is in need of volunteers.

Cananea, the sister city of Safford, is about one hour south of Douglas, and Bacoachi is nearly an hour south of Cananea.

The service project will take place April 15-16, in partnership with Lions Clubs in Cananea, Agua Prieta, Arizpe and Hermosillo.

The Lions Club uses auto refractor eye screening machines to determine if the subject has vision issue that should be addressed by an optometrist or opthamologist. The person simply looks at the machine and a reading is made in seconds — there is no physical contact at all.

The device can be used on people of any age, and the Safford Lions Club spends the year screening school children in Graham, Greenlee and northern Cochise counties.

Last year, the club screened more than 600 people in Cananea and Agua Prieta, and brought 1,600 pairs of donated eyeglasses for the communities.
