Safford fire battles lumber yard, garbage truck fires

SAFFORD — Safford firefighters were called out twice in less than 10 hours Thursday and Friday.

At about 10 p.m. Thursday, the call came in of fire in the lumber yard at Safford Builders Supply/Ace Hardware. Firefighters were able to contain the fire in the lumber yard and extinguish the blaze.

Investigation into cause of the fire is ongoing and loss estimates were not immediately provided.

The second fire occurred at about 7:15 a.m. Friday, when the driver of a Safford garbage truck saw smoke coming from his vehicle.

He was able to dump the load in the vacant lot on the southwest corner of 8th Avenue and 8th Street, next to the railroad tracks, and firefighters were able to knock down the fire in about 30 minutes.
