SAFFORD — Safford City Manager John Cassella was one of two finalists for the position of city manager for the City of Cottonwood; however, the Cottonwood City Council opted to go in a different direction.

During a special meeting March 27, the Cottonwood City Council voted to approve a contract with Scotty Douglas, the deputy city manager for Modesto, Calif., to serve as the new city manager. Douglas will begin his tenure on May 15, pending completion of a successful background check.

Only four members of the City Council were present and voted on the job offer at the special meeting.

Cassella was one of 35 to apply for the position, which carries a salary range of $136,745 to $205,118, depending on education and experience.

Cassella declined comment to Gila Valley Central.
