Redistricting meeting coming to San Carlos

SAN CARLOS — Graham County residents have one more opportunity to have their voices heard when it comes to congressional and legislative redistricting in the state.

The Arizona Independent Redistricting Commission is conducting a series of meetings to solicit public input on the proposed final maps for the congressional and legislative districts, and the closest for Graham and Greenlee counties will take place Wednesday, Nov. 17, at 6 p.m. in the San Carlos Apache Tribal Council Chambers. Face masks are required to attend.

Those interested in commenting on the proposed districts can also attend virtually, at https://azgov.webex.com/azgov/j.php?MTID=m1ac7cb43047dccb8654a84415b3cfc0a. The event number is 2458 412 2940 and the vent password is jaMSkmPW743.

The proposed legislative district looks similar to the existing district, which includes all of Greenlee and Cochise counties, most of Graham County excluding the San Carlos Apache Reservation, and the community of Vail in Pima County. Added to the district would be communities south of Tucson and the northern portion of Santa Cruz County.

The proposed congressional district would be significantly different from the existing district, which includes all of Graham, Greenlee, Navajo, Apache and Coconino counties, as well as portions of Pinal, Gila, Yavapai and Maricopa counties.

The new district would include all of Greenlee and Cochise counties, most of Graham County excluding the San Carlos Apache Reservation, a portion of Tucson in Pima County, and extend into Pinal County to include Coolidge.
