SAFFORD — Members of Safford city staff and the Graham County Chamber of Commerce had a chance to personally find out more about the four people being considered for the position of assistant city manager.
City Manager John Cassella held a meet and greet Wednesday at the Safford Library for the four candidates.
Pat Oman, who most recently served as Becker County administrator in Detroit Lakes, Minn., said he believes his 12 years experience in economic development makes him a strong candidate.
“I was involved in creating jobs and relocating business to the community, writing grants, serving the needs of our local stakeholders — our business stakeholders and our government units,” Oman said.

Jaime Embick is the only candidate who is currently a Safford employee, serving as the Planning and Community Development director. She focused on the achievements she’s made in her present job and doing more for the city.
“Was I ready to take on more work and responsibility? The conclusion I came to was, yes. I am ready, and capable and, most of all, I’m excited,” Embick said.

Dennis Durham most recently served for one year as the city manager for the City of Grandville, Mich. He said that, as a former journalist, he understands that keeping the public informed about what is happening is critical for good city government.
“One of the questions I will always ask is, ‘What is the communication plan on this project?’ whether it’s a street program or whether it’s just the budget process,” Durham said.

Eric Bejarano is the director for the Small Business Development Center at Eastern Arizona College. He cited his working relationships with numerous entities across the Gila Valley as something he would bring to the assistant city manager position.
“Key initiatives will include expanding and fostering public-private relationships; supported by building lasting relationships with our citizens; local communities; (and) local, state and federal legislators and representatives,” Bejarano said.
Those in attendance were asked to offer their input on the candidates via an online survey.
Cassella said he expects to make a selection within the next few weeks.
