Pima re-examining location of industrial zone

PIMA — After deciding on an area to be designated as the industrial zone for the town, the Town Council is reconsidering that zone’s location.

“When I think of industrial, I think of lots of heavy equipment, lots of big trucks, (and) lots of semis. I have a hard time imagining an industrial zone out in the middle of Pima, on two of the most awfulest, smallest roads we have,” said Councilman Lucas Hoopes. “I would like to see something closer to the highway, where these big semis don’t have to drive through town, past the cemetery, by my house, to get to where they’re wanting to go.”

Representatives of the town’s Planning and Zoning Commission agreed with Hoopes, and said that’s why the commission is recommending two industrial zones: light and heavy. Plus there are already two industrial-type businesses in operation in the area the town previously designated for industrial development.

“I think we need to address this sooner rather than later, and I think we need to come up with an agreement with both of these tenants that we have out there right now,” Hoopes said. “Maybe we don’t allow for any more building, maybe we don’t allow for any more like that.”

The Town Council agreed to review Planning and Zoning Commission’s recommendations, and conduct a joint public meeting with the commission.
