PIMA, Ariz. – Riding an 11-game winning streak, the Pima Roughriders (11-1) are set to clash with the undefeated Tonopah Valley Phoenix (12-0) in the 2A state semifinals on Saturday, November 23, at 2 p.m. at Westwood High School. Fans unable to attend can catch all the action live on KATO 1230AM in the Gila Valley or stream it at GilaValleyCentral.net. Pima, determined to return to the state championship game after last season’s heartbreaking loss to Scottsdale Christian, aims to extend their winning streak and hand Tonopah Valley their first defeat of the season.

The Roughriders have been on a tear since a narrow 14-7 loss to Safford on August 29. Their streak has featured impressive wins, including a double-overtime thriller over Morenci (20-14) and dominant shutouts of Alchesay (48-0) and San Carlos (66-0). In their most recent outing, Pima defeated Bisbee 38-22, potentially closing out Edd Hubbard Field with a victory as they are expected to move to a new facility next season.

Leading Pima’s charge is star running back Jeremiah Martinez, who averages 153.3 rushing yards per game and is key to the Roughriders’ ground-dominated attack. Quarterback Cedrick Grimes adds balance with his passing game, averaging 103 yards per contest and targeting reliable receivers such as Preston Russell and Wade Peterson. On defense, Pima boasts a strong core led by Joe Palmer, averaging 8.8 tackles per game, and sack leader Brock Haws.

Their opponent, Tonopah Valley, presents a formidable challenge. The Phoenix are led by quarterback Sir-izzik Sánchez Caldwell, who averages nearly 300 passing yards per game, making him a dynamic threat. Caldwell’s favorite targets include receiver Najea Cooper, while running back Thomas Foilefutu bolsters the rushing attack. With an average of 46.6 points per game and a perfect 12-0 record, Tonopah Valley’s high-scoring offense will test Pima’s defense at every turn.

Both teams share a common victory over Scottsdale Christian Academy, with Pima winning 20-17 and Tonopah Valley triumphing 35-32. Pima defeated Tonopah Valley 57-28 in their only previous meeting last year and will aim to replicate that success to reach another title game appearance.

What to Watch For:

  • Pima’s Ground Game Dominance: The Roughriders’ success often hinges on the performance of Jeremiah Martinez. Expect Pima to lean heavily on him to control the clock and wear down Tonopah Valley’s defense.
  • Quarterback Duel: Cedrick Grimes’ steady, efficient play will contrast with Sir-izzik Sánchez Caldwell’s explosive passing attack. Look for big throws and pivotal plays from both signal-callers.
  • Tonopah Valley’s High-Octane Offense: The Phoenix have consistently put up large point totals, relying on their aerial attack. Pima’s defense will need to contain Caldwell and limit big plays.
  • Battle in the Trenches: Pima’s offensive and defensive lines have been key to their success, dominating opponents at the line of scrimmage. Winning this battle will be crucial for controlling the tempo and protecting against Tonopah Valley’s offensive threat.
  • Redemption and Motivation: After falling short in last year’s title game, Pima is on a mission to return and claim the championship. This motivation could provide an edge in a high-stakes game.
  • Turnover Battle: With both teams possessing high-powered offenses, turnovers could be a game-changer. Watch for key defensive plays that could shift the game’s momentum.
