Patient information appears safe following recent MGRMC system hack

SAFFORD — Mt. Graham Regional Medical Center officials confirmed that its patient medical record system was not breached during the recent hack of its computer information systems.

In a statement issued Friday, Oc. 13, officials said that internal access to systems and data has been restored, and patients can access their information through the online patient portal.

“The speed at which we have been able to recover is a credit to our dedicated staff going above and beyond with many long days and nights,” hospital officials said in a prepared statement.

System restoration is still ongoing and staff is finalizing review to determine if any patient information was compromised. If any patients have been impacted, the hospital will communicate directly with those individuals.

Officials said the hospital was able to meet all employee payroll and accounts payable commitments.

MGRMC was hit with a ransomware attack on Sept. 27, and the hospital immediately brought in information technology experts to rebuild the system and law enforcement to investigate the incursion.

Ransomware is malware inserted in a computer network or system by hackers, encrypting the victim’s data. The hackers demand a ransom for a decryption key.
