Next hike offers a window to fall colors

SAFFORD — The Gila Valley Hiking Club announced another hike is taking place this weekend.

Saturday the club will participate in its annual Fall Colors Hike to Ash Creek in the Galiuro Mountains.

The 3.7-mile hike features a trailhead elevation of 4,917 feet, with an elevation gain of 987 feet. This is an out-and-back hike, and hikers should plan for 2.5 to three hours to wander up to the aspens, and another two hours to get back.

There is no cost to participate and hikers can proceed at his or her own pace.

Meet-up is at 7:30 a.m. at the Graham County Fairground parking lot for carpooling to the starting point. Hikers are asked to bring water, sun protection, and light lunch and snacks. Portions of the hike are through tall grasses, cat tail, locust bushes and across rocky stream beds, so comfortable shoes and long pants are recommended.

Return is expected by 4:30-5 p.m.
