SAFFORD —The Mt. Graham Golf Club has been ranked as one of the top-20 golf courses in Arizona.

That’s according to NBC’s Golfpass online.

Mt. Graham Golf Club is ranked No. 17 for Golfers’ Choice 2023: Best golf courses in Arizona, with a ranking of 4.7 out of 5 stars.

Fred Barquin, president of the Mount Graham Golf Association, said he was thrilled with the news.

“We work hand in hand to make it a very welcoming place,” Barquin said. “It reflects our community involvement . . . we’re constantly looking to make it better.”

Golfers gave Mt. Graham Golf Club consistently high marks for value, layout and amenities, and the course received 5 stars from golfers for friendliness and pace of play. The only non 4-plus star ranking was for conditions, which averaged 3.8 stars.

Barquin said the manager of the club, Dominic Curran, should receive recognition for his work at the club. Safford City Councilman Arnold Lopez agreed.

“To have this recognition is really great, it’s something to point out in our community,” Lopez said. “So we can let everybody know, come and visit us. When you’re here to eat in our shops, don’t forget to play a round of golf and don’t forget to look at the telescopes.”

Mt. Graham is an 18-hole, 6,354-yard course and was opened in 1974. The course is owned by the City of Safford, overseen in conjunction with the Town of Thatcher, and managed by Troon Golf and Club Management.
