PHOENIX — Arizona Gov. Katie Hobbs has appointed a Morenci man to the state’s Board of Regents.

Hobbs appointed Steve Peru and Dr. Michele Halyard to the body governing Arizona’s universities.

“I’m proud to appoint two distinguished Arizonans to the Arizona Board of Regents,” Hobbs said in a prepared release. “Dr. Michele Halyard is a leader in medical education who will provide expertise to the Board as the universities work to meet the state’s healthcare needs. Steve Peru is a longtime public servant with decades of experience who will bring his pragmatic leadership and focus on accountability to the Board. Our public university students deserve the best, and I’m confident Michele and Steve will help ensure the continued excellence of higher education in Arizona.”

Peru is a Morenci native and has worked as the Coconino County manager and with Coconino Community College. He’s also serves as president of the United Way of Northern Arizona and with the First Things First state board.

Halyard is a Professor of Radiation Oncology and is the retired Suzanne Hanson Poole vice dean of the Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine. She also serves on the Arizona Community Foundation board of directors and served on the Arizona Bioscience Roadmap Steering Committee.
