MORENCI — The Wildcats left no doubt Friday night, jumping out early and rolling to a 45–6 win over Tuba City in the opening round of the 2A State Playoffs.
Morenci’s ground game was the difference. Julien Aragon carried 23 times for 262 yards and four touchdowns, including runs of 5, 92, and 45 yards. Deegan Miller went 9-of-18 passing for 168 yards and a touchdown, connecting with Jaymz Guzzo five times for 73 yards and a score. Richard Rodriguez added two catches for 80 yards as Morenci’s offense piled up more than 500 total yards.
Aundre McCauley and Tony Rogers each ran in short touchdowns, while the Wildcat defense forced three turnovers and kept the Warriors out of the end zone until the third quarter. McCauley had two interceptions and Joel Baca recovered a fumble.
Head coach Frankie Gonzalez said he was pleased with how his team performed in all areas.
“The boys played well in all three phases of the game,” Gonzalez said. “I think our physicality came through, which was good to see. Offensively, we looked as good as we have all year. We’re excited for the challenge of facing an athletic Scottsdale Christian team.”
With the win, Morenci (7–4) advances to the second round and will travel to face #2 Scottsdale Christian next Friday at 7 p.m.
