SAFFORD — The first big music festival of the year starts Wednesday.
The Matheson Music Festival kicks-off with a special concert at Eastern Arizona College at 7 p.m.
“That’s what sets the stage for the whole week,” said co-organizer Brianna DeRusha. “We’ve got that concert going on, and then we’ll have our musicians going out into the schools; we’re going to Pima, Safford and Thatcher.”
Tickets for the concert can be purchased by clicking here. Proceeds benefit student scholarships at EAC.
Thursday, the event moves to the Ag Building at Graham County Fairgrounds, with the Gila Valley Idol preliminary at 6:30 p.m., plus an open mic with the bands after the competition. Admission is free.
Friday, Saturday and Sunday will feature three days of music by some of the best Americana, Blue Grass, and Country bands playing today, including:
- Edgar Loudermilk
- Phoebe Hunt and Dominick Leslie
- Jampak
- The Honey Buckets
- Cisco and Racecars
- And more
Admission to the weekend’s events are $25 per day, $70 for a weekend pass, and $30 for a weekend pass for veterans and seniors 65 and older. Children 17 and younger are free. Weekend pass with camping at the Fairgrounds is $130.

“We play until we can’t play anymore; 1 or 2 in the morning,” said co-organizer Joe Baxter. “We go to bed, we wake up, have breakfast together and we keep play. So it’s a whole weekend.”
