Margarita Varela Holguin, our beloved Mother, Grandmother, Sister and loving Friend went home to be with the Lord in the late hours on, Monday, November 11, 2024, in Safford, Arizona surrounded by her family. She was 94.
Margie was born on April 13, 1930, in Metcalf, Arizona, to Juan and Guadalupe Varela. She was the eldest of seven children. Her younger siblings being Rebecca Verdugo, Oralia Pacheco, Linda Macias, Maggie Morales, Armida McCullar and Johnny Varela. Margie grew up in Metcalf until 1939 when the community of Metcalf was forced to leave due to mining activities forcing the family to relocate to Clifton, Arizona. Margie was very proud of being from Metcalf and often told stories of what it was like growing up there.
Margie met the love of her life, Arturo Holguin, at an early age and married on December 15, 1946. They would raise their first three children, Celia, Hermina, and Julia in Clifton, Arizona until 1957 when Arturo took a job for McDonnell Douglas and moved the family to Norwalk, California. Here she would have her sons, Art and Michael. They spent twelve years in California moving back in 1969 making their home in Sheldon, Arizona.
Margie was passionate about gardening, loved to crochet and being in the outdoors, loved nothing more than cooking for everyone that stopped in. But most of all loved spending time with her children and grandchildren.
Margie was a dedicated and devoted Catholic who loved the Lord with all her heart. Teaching her family to follow the lord and to always have faith in life and in each other. To love by being loved and to look after one another and treat everyone in the community as family. Although she is gone, her enduring values and spirit will forever live in our hearts and her valuable lessons will be passed on to the next generation.
