Man tries to pass counterfeit $100 bill

SAFFORD – The owner of a locally-owned business contacted police on Thursday regarding a man who tried to pay for his purchase with a counterfeit $100 bill.

The business owner told authorities that the incident occurred in the late afternoon when she was in the process of closing up. A man brought an $0.85 item to the check out register and said that all he had was a $100 bill. When the man handed her the money she knew if was fake. The texture did not feel right and it looked like an old version of the bill. The woman told him that she couldn’t accept the bill. He then reportedly got very nervous and took the money back. The man then reached into his pocket and pulled out a wad of cash. He handed the cashier a $1 bill to pay for the item and left. The woman told authorities that she thought it was suspicious because at first the man said that all he had was $100 bill.

The suspect is described as a Hispanic male of medium build. He had short hair on top with a blonde or lighter colored tail in the back. The business reportedly did not have cameras to capture images of the suspect, which could have helped identify him.
