SAFFORD — Late Tuesday evening, organizers announced the Gila Valley Pride event for 2024 has been cancelled.
The event was originally scheduled for June 1 at the Ag Building at Graham County Fairgrounds.
Organizer Nick Nordgran-Tellez said the cancellation was the result of a number of board members finding they were unable to participate due to other commitments.
“Gila Valley Pride Inc., the organization, is going to stick around; it’ll maintain,” Nordgran-Tellez said during an appearance on Voice of the Valley. “We’ll see if we can get another board going and some individuals involved, and we’ll see where it goes from there.”
Nordgran-Tellez said the process for refunding vendors and ticket purchasers has begun.
The event described itself as a day-long affair to “promote unity, visibility, and self-esteem among gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, and queer persons,” with live music, drag shows, vendors and a Pride Royalty competition.
Nordgran-Tellez suggested those who planned to attend Gila Valley Pride instead this year explore the Pride events in Bisbee (June 14-16), Tucson (Sept. 28) or Phoenix (Oct. 19-20).
