Lions’ Field of Honor adds high school essay contest

SAFFORD — The Safford Lions Club announced it is conducting an essay contest in conjunction with its annual Field of Honor celebrating Veterans Day.

The contest requires an essay of 300- to 500-words on a military service person who has had an influence on the writer’s life.

The essay judged in first place will earn the writer $1,000, second place gets $500 and third $250. Plus all three will prize-winning essays will be published in the Safford Lions Club’s Field of Honor Program Guide, and the writers recognized during the Veterans Day Parade on Nov. 11.

Any high school student in Graham County is eligible to participate. For the full list of rules and submission forms, e-mail saffordlionsessaycontest@gmail.com. Deadline to enter is Sept. 22.

The Field of Honor was started in 2019 and residents place a flag in honor of a family member or friend who served or is currently serving in any branch of the United State military. A tag naming the veteran or active-duty member of the military is attached to the flag pole.

The flags are placed on the lawns in front of Safford City Hall and the Graham County Courthouse in the week leading up to Veterans Day.
