Safford – The Gila Valley Leadership Class XIII presented the City of Safford Graham County Library a check in the amount of $2450.00 for new tables purchased for the library’s Teen Room. The presentation was made at the Safford City Council meeting Monday evening. The Gila Valley Leadership class raised the money as a community service project. The presentation was made by Nathan Estes, project manager for the fundraiser. Estes said the money was raised through a GoFundMe page and hot chocolate sales at local events. Estes told Gila Valley Central that another $600 from the project was allocated for a “Save Skylar” bench at the Boys and Girls Club. The Gila Valley Leadership Class is an annual training course administered by the Graham County Chamber of Commerce.
Graham County Chamber of Commerce director, Patrick O’Donnell made his first annual report to the council. O’Donnell assumed leadership of the chamber when it was reorganized several years ago. O’Donnell said they have worked hard to increase membership and provide community events. O’Donnell said one significant purpose of the chamber is to support and create opportunities for increased tourist visitation through events.
The council also passed a resolution establishing August 28, 2018 as the date for a primary election. It’s anticipated that voters will have the opportunity to vote on a measure changing the term of city mayor from two years to four.
