SAFFORD —A Gila Valley resident wants to know what the local governments, school districts and law enforcement would do in an active shooter situation.

To find out, Hal Herbert has set up the Community Reassurance Event Aug. 20, from 10 a.m. to noon at the Graham County General Services Building.

“I just felt that we need reassurance. Especially us gray-hairs who do not have kids in schools, so we don’t really know what happening in our schools,” Herbert said.

Invited are the police chiefs and school superintendents for Safford, Thatcher and Pima, the superintendents for Bonita and Solomon school districts, and Graham County Sheriff P.J. Allred.

“This is not a political meeting. I do not want to have politics come into this meeting; I’ve done everything I can to avoid politics,” Herbert said. “This is not an anti-gun meeting, it’s not a pro-gun meeting, it’s an informative meeting about what our law enforcement and superintendents are going to do — not specifically, we’re not going to get into tactics and methods — but generally are they prepared and have they practiced to respond.”
