Hiking, family bash offered by Graham County Substance Abuse Coalition

THATCHER — The Graham County Substance Abuse Coalition is making sure that area teens won’t stay idle during the summer break from school.

The coalition has two events scheduled for June. The first sees the coalition partnering with the Gila Valley Adventure Club for a special trip up Mount Graham.

“It’s an Earth and Nature Appreciation Hike with Louie Lorenzo,” said Kristine Ekval with the Adventure Club. “He, I believe, is Apache and he’s going to be talking about some of the traditions, their music (and) the importance of Mount Graham to them. So we’re super excited about that.

The hike will take place Saturday, June 10, starting at 10 a.m. Transportation and lunch will be provided. To register a teen, call 928-322-1747.

Six days later, the Substance Abuse Coalition will host its first Summer Bash Family Night of the season, Friday, June 16, at Grant Park in Thatcher.

The free event will take place from 5:30-9:30 p.m. and will feature food, games, prizes, a family movie; and activities, including water fun courtesy of the Thatcher Fire Department and dummy roping.
