DUNCAN — An update on the Tamarisk Beetle’s progress along the Gila River valley will take place this month.

Gila Watershed Partnership has been tracking the beetle for years, waiting for its arrival in the Gila Valley. Now that it’s here, GWP wants to update residents on what to expect.

The beetle eats the leaves of Salt Cedar (Tamarisk) trees and was released as a biocontrol in 2001. It was first spotted last summer along the San Francisco River and now it’s making its way up and down the Gila.

Kara Barron, science and outreach manager for GWP, will update the public on where the beetle has been spotted, how to identify it and what the beetle means for the Gila’s riparian areas.

The Tamarisk Beetle Update will take place Wednesday, Sept. 15, from 6:30-7:30 p.m., at the Greenlee County Annex in Duncan.
