SAFFORD —Gila Watershed Partnership has a new partner in protecting the watershed.

“We did just sign and start a new grant with the Arizona Department of Fire and Forestry Management, where will bring in the fire crew from Fort Grant to do some prescribed burns,” said Dr. Sarah Sayles, GWP executive director.

The burns will help protect the area from wildfire spread, as well as remove fire fuel left from the tamarisk beetle, which feeds on salt cedar trees.

To shore up the area, GWP volunteers are installing native plants in the cleared areas, as well as offering native plants for sale to area residents.

The . . . native plant sale is going to start March 25 and run through April 29,” Sayles said. “People will be able to get on our website starting that Monday, which I believe is March 21, and make appointments if they want to come out in person to buy plants; so they can walk around in the nursery. And if they don’t want to do that, they can buy whatever they want online. We’ll have a whole inventory available to purchase virtually.”

When buying online, an appointment will be set for the following Friday.

The plants are grown in GWP’s greenhouse and serve as a fund-raiser for GWP’s mission. To purchase or make an appointment for in-person shopping, go to Virtual Spring Plant Sale | Gila Watershed Partnership (gwpaz.org).
