Greenlee reclaims lowest unemployment in the state

PHOENIX — Each of the 15 counties in Arizona saw a decrease in the number of unemployed in July, but none more than Greenlee County.

The jobless rate in Greenlee County fell one full point in July, to 5.3 percent, tied with Yavapai County for the lowest unemployment in the state.

That’s according to data released Thursday by the Arizona Commerce Authority

Graham County’s jobless rate fell five-tenths of a point to 5.8 percent in July, good for fourth place behind Maricopa County in third at 5.7 percent.

Nearby Cochise County dropped seven-tenths of a point to 6.2 percent unemployment in July.

Statewide, the seasonally-adjusted unemployment rate fell two-tenths of a point in July to 6.6 percent; remaining well below the same time last year, when Arizona’s unemployment rate was at 10.4 percent. The national rate also fell five-tenths of a point in July to 5.4 percent.

Most of Arizona’s economic sectors reported job gains in July: Professional and business services (up 11,700 jobs); leisure and hospitality (up 2,400 jobs); financial activities (up 2,300 jobs); information (up 400 jobs); construction (up 300 jobs); and manufacturing (up 100 jobs).

Posting job losses were education and health services (down 2,000 jobs); and trade, transportation and utilities (down 800 jobs).

Natural resources and mining remained flat in July, posting no job gains or losses.
