SAFFORD — In two weeks, the Graham County Historical Society will host its first fund-raiser for its new museum, and the society is looking for people who love to barbecue.

The inaugural Graham Rib Throwdown will take place March 10-11 at Graham County Fairgrounds.

“It’s a BBQ Championship Series sanctioned event,” said Historical Society President Harvey John. “So we’ll have people from all around coming to our town to do this.”

There will be $5,000 in cash prizes, and competitors will have their ribs officially judged in double-blind tastings, as well as vie for people’s choice awards.

To enter in the rib contest, contact Michael Reimann of AZ Barbecue at 602-363-5196.

Things get underway Friday at 4 p.m. with the opening of the Estrella Jalisco Beer Garden, followed by the Appetizer and Dessert contests at 6 p.m. All desserts in the contest must include some form of graham cracker.

On Saturday, ribs go on sale for the people’s choice awards at noon, with one rib for $2.50 or 10 for $20.

Also Saturday is a cornhole tournament inside the Ag Building. Cost is $40 per team and to register contact Pete Gauna at 602-316-0953.

For more information about the event, to be a member of the Graham County Historical Society and to participate in other society events, go to Graham County Historical Society (grahamazhistory.org).
