SAFFORD —Graham County Sheriff P.J. Allred announced the Graham County Sheriff s Office will officially launch Inmate Growth Naturally and lntentionally Through Education (I.G.N.I.T.E.) on Sept. 23, becoming the second site in Arizona and the 44th in the nation to implement the nationally recognized initiative.
I.G.N.I.T.E. was created by Chris Swanson, Sheriff of Genesee County, Mich., and has since grown into a flagship program of the National Sheriffs’ Association. The program is designed to reduce recidivism and improve outcomes by providing incarcerated individuals with structured access to education, vocational training, and personal development opportunities.
“We already have strong programs in our facility,” Allred said. “l.G.N.l.T.E. strengthens those efforts and helps us create long-term, positive change for Graham County. We may be a small community, but when we work together as a team, we grow stronger. l.G.N.l.T.E. helps us combine our efforts and create long-term, positive change for Graham County.”
The I.G.N.I.T.E. model emphasizes a merit-based system, where participants earn privileges and opportunities through consistent engagement in educational programming. The initiative leverages modern technology, structured curriculum, and strong community partnerships to create a culture of growth inside correctional facilities.
Importantly, I.G.N.I.T.E. is not just innovative; it is evidence-based. Independent researchers from leading institutions, including Harvard University, Brown University and Stanford University, have studied the program and its impact, reinforcing its effectiveness in improving inmate outcomes and reducing repeat offenses.
The Sept. 23 launch will mark a significant milestone for Graham County as it joins a growing national network of sheriffs’ offices committed to transforming corrections through education.
“ln Graham County, supporting effective reentry efforts is a critical part of maintaining public safety and strengthening our community. When individuals are given the tools to succeed, it enhances stability for everyone we serve.” Allred said.
Community members, partners, and local leaders will be invited to attend the launch event and learn more about how I.G.N.l.T.E. is helping reshape the future of corrections.
