SAFFORD — The Graham County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved Monday the Health Department’s contracting with another registered nurse for COVID-19 services.

Health Department Director Brian Douglas explained why the county is contracting with RNs rather than other health-care professionals who could perform the same work at a lower hourly rate.

“Hiring LPNs, MAs and so on, they have to work under the direction of a physician. With us, we have a contracted physician which is not onsite. Because of that we’re not able to hire,” Douglas said.

The county is contracting with registered nurses for $30 an hour.

Graham County Health Department is providing free vaccines to anyone 5-years-old and older, and free boosters to anyone 18 and older. To schedule an appointment for the free vaccine or booster, go to Activities • Graham County, AZ • CivicEngage.

Arizona Department of Health Services reports 9,031 Graham County residents have tested positive for COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic, and just 55.8 percent of the county’s residents have been vaccinated.
