SAFFORD — The Graham County Board of Supervisors were asked to approve 19 different agreements, contracts and memoranda of understanding Monday, everything from Health Department services, to contracts with public defenders.

“I’m glad there’s so many people here today. I know they’re not here to hear all this, but it amazes me how much the county provides to everybody,” Supervisor John Howard said. “I’m glad you can see what we have to do on budgeting, and the services we do have to provide. So I’m glad you’re here to hear that and maybe understand a little bit more about the services we provide.”

For the Sheriff’s Office, the board approved an agreement with DPS for the Sheriff’s Office to enforce immigration, human and drug smuggling, gang and employer sanction laws. The agreement comes with $100,000 funding to the Sheriff’s Office.

The board also approved an agreement with the Arizona Department of Administration for a $192,000 grant for the county’s 9-1-1 system.

For the courts, the board approved contracts with five attorneys — Rebecca Johnson, Josi Lopez, Dennis McCarthy, Daisy Flores and Barry Standifird — to provide counsel for adults who cannot afford an attorney in criminal proceedings; and contracts with two attorneys —Johnson and Lopez — for juvenile indigent services.

The contracts are for 140 adult felony cases per year per attorney, with Johnson and Lopez also to provide services for up to 130 juvenile cases per year.

Costs per attorney are:

● Johnson — $121,760 per year for adult cases, plus $834 per additional case in excess of 140; $21,500 for juvenile cases, plus $165 per additional cases in excess of 130

● Lopez — $116,760 per year for adult cases, plus $834 per additional case in excess of 140; $26,500 for juvenile cases, plus $165 per additional cases in excess of 130

The Health Department received approvals on agreements with Mt. Graham Regional Medical Center to provide outpatient, inpatient and emergency room services for inmates; with Dr. Susan Jones to serve as the medical director for the detention center; with Dr. Catherine Romero to serve as the department’s Superintendent of Health; with Dr. Matthew Sampson to provide tuberculosis control services; with Emily Riddle to provide mental health consultation; and with Gila Valley Clinic to provide family planning services for Health Department clients.
