Graham and Greenlee County students among winners of AZ529 Art Contest

Morenci Metcalf Elementary student Wesley Adams and Alfonso Figueroa from Bonita Elementary School in Graham County are among the 15 winners of the AZ529 statewide Art Contest.  Wesley and Alfonso were selected from more than 600 students who entered artwork in the Dream, Draw, Win contest sponsored by the AZ529 program and administered through the State Treasurer’s Office.

The Arizona State Treasurer’s Office and the AZ529 Advisory Committee invited k-6 students from around Arizona to create artwork that showed their future career dreams. The winners will receive $529 towards an AZ529 Education Savings Plan.

Wesley shared his dream of being a scientist. Alfonso dreams of being a professional soccer star. Wesley and Alfonso, along with all the winners were honored during a ceremony at the State Capitol,  yesterday, (April 10, 2024). Treasurer Kimberly Yee will present each winner with a giant check and certificate, and of course show off our young Arizona scholars’ artwork.

The AZ529 Education Savings Plan offers a tax-free approach to setting money aside for college, community college, vocational training, trade school and other educational avenues for high school graduates. Arizona residents can receive a dollar-for-dollar state tax deduction for contributions made to an AZ529 account each year, of up to $2,000 per beneficiary or $4,000 per beneficiary, depending on filing status. Funds earned over time will remain tax-free when used for a wide variety of covered educational expenses. Beginning this year, 529 plan beneficiaries will be able to rollover unused funds into a Roth IRA, free of income tax or tax penalties. Additionally, friends and family members may add to a child’s AZ529 Plan at any time and earn the same tax benefits for themselves. For more information about AZ529, visit http://www.az529.gov.
