SAFFORD — The Gila Watershed Partnership’s Native Plants Nursery Fall Plant Sale will run the next three Fridays, with a special event the day after Halloween.

“If you bring your child or your grandchild in a costume, you will get a 5 percent discount on everything you buy in the sale,” said Dr. Sarah Sayles, executive director for GWP.

To encourage families, the Nov. 1 sale day will also feature the “creepy critters,” giving children a chance to safely interact with bats, snakes, tarantulas, scorpions and more, as well as learn about the creatures’ importance to the local ecology.

The kickoff event will be held Oct. 18, at 9 a.m., at the Gila Native Plants Nursery at Discovery Park. Shoppers can get all of their native plants questions answered by experts, and the special sale item this season is pomegranate.

“They’re not really intrusive, they’re not going to spread their seeds far and wide, and we’re not going to wake up 10 years from now having pomegranates taking over Mount Graham,” said Jennifer Farris, GWP Nursery manager. “They are a wonderful species; they’re a wonderful citrus replacement, and they do wonderful in our environment of sandy soil (and) dry soil.”

The nursery will be open to the public from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.  Oct. 18, Oct. 25 and Nov. 1.

The Nursery is not a retail store, but was founded to provide plants for the restoration activities of the Gila Watershed Partnership. The annual fund-raiser helps the nursery support all of its work in the community.
