Filing date approaching to run for local school boards

SAFFORD — In a press release issued Sunday, Graham County School Superintendent Donna McGaughey reminds registered voters that candidate packets for School District Governing Boards are available.

Candidate packets may be picked up in the Graham County School Superintendent’s Office at the county’s General Services Building, 921 Thatcher Blvd. Safford. The office is open Monday through Thursday, from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day 

Candidates must file a Statement of Interest prior to collecting any signatures. This document is included in the candidate packet.

Candidates may file their nonpartisan nomination paperwork beginning June 10, and the deadline to file is 5 p.m. July 8.

The races will be decided in the Nov. 5 General Election.

All school district governing board nomination paperwork must be filed in the Graham County School Superintendent’s Office. All other special district nomination packets — such as the Graham County Community (Eastern Arizona College) District Governing Board, fire districts, hospital districts, etc. — are available in the Graham County Board of Supervisor’s Office, also located at the Graham County General Services Building. The following seats expire Dec. 31, and all terms are for four years unless otherwise noted:

  • Bonita School District No. 16: One seat
  • Ft. Thomas Unified School District No. 7: Three seats
  • Gila Institute for Technology No. 2 (GIFT): Two Graham County seats – Safford, Thatcher   
  • Klondyke School District No. 9: Two seats
  • Pima Unified School District No. 6: Three seats
  • Safford Unified School District No. 1: Three seats
  • Solomon School District No. 5: Two seats
  • Thatcher Unified School District No. 4: Three (4 year) seats, one two-year seat*

The last day to register to vote in the General Election is Oct. 7.

*Thatcher Unified School District No. 4 now has a two-year seat available due to a recent vacancy. This seat will be on the Nov. 5, General Election ballot and the remainder of the term will be from January 2025 to December 2026.
