THATCHER, Ariz. — Cheered on by Eastern Arizona College’s men’s and women’s basketball teams, nearly 250 triathletes crossed the finish line for the annual Gila Hank’s Sprint Triathlon.

“We are thrilled to bring the excitement of Gila Hank’s Sprint Triathlon to EAC,” said Dr. Gary Sorensen, EAC dean of students and director of summer camps and large events. “Participants and visitors of all ages from all over the state enjoyed the stunning scenery, beautiful weather, and our friendly campus community. Everyone safely finished the race, made great friends, and were part of something amazing!”

Held on Eastern Arizona College’s Thatcher Campus, the annual triathlon consisted of a 75-yard swim, 6-mile bike, and 1.5-mile run. Participants competed as individuals or as part of a relay team, and several camped overnight on EAC’s practice fields near John Mickelson Stadium.

“I just ran EAC’s triathlon and it was freaking awesome,” said Porter Hakes, a participant from Mesa, Arizona. “The pool was warm and that was a huge bonus. The scenery was super nice and it was great to get out of the city. Everyone should do it next year!”
