EAC Marching Band Honored with performance at 2023 Pearl Harbor Memorial Parade

THATCHER, Ariz. — The Eastern Arizona College Marching Band had the distinct privilege of representing the state of Arizona at the 2023 Pearl Harbor Memorial Parade in Hawaii. The Pearl Harbor Memorial Committee, in collaboration with The National Park Service and The History Channel, selected the 58-student band for the annual parade, marking the 82nd anniversary of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor.

During their visit to Hawaii, the EAC Marching Band participated in the parade and delivered a tribute performance on the USS Missouri’s deck and at the Polynesian Cultural Center.

Geoff DeSpain, EAC professor of music and band director, commented, “We were honored to represent EAC and the state of Arizona. The music we performed paid tribute to our veterans, the armed forces, and this historical event.”

As part of their educational experience, band members paid a visit to the USS Arizona Memorial, engaging with survivors. Positioned over the remains of the battleship USS Arizona, the memorial serves as the final resting place for the majority of the 1,117 military personnel who lost their lives on December 7, 1941.

“As our students performed, they particularly remembered the USS Arizona’s 21-member band who perished when Pearl Harbor was attacked 81 years ago,” remarked DeSpain. “The USS Arizona band was warming up to play the national anthem at 8 o’clock sharp that day. They didn’t get to play a note because the attack began before the colors could be posted.”

Established prior to Arizona gaining statehood, the EAC Marching Band boasts a century-long legacy, distinguishing itself as the sole community college marching band in the state. Their participation in the 2023 Pearl Harbor Memorial Parade not only reinforced the band’s standing but exemplified how community colleges offer distinctive opportunities and accessible educational experiences for students.

“Our band members come from all over the country,” said DeSpain. “When students come to EAC, they find an immediate family with the band. They feel comfortable here and make friendships that will last a lifetime.”
