THATCHER — The impaired driving simulator may not have been operational, but that was the only negative at the annual Dump the Drugs event Saturday.

Kathy Grimes, executive director for the Graham County Substance Abuse Coalition, said the event’s return following a break due to the pandemic was a rousing success.

“It was so nice to get our community back together,” she said. “We had great participation — our law enforcement, our fire departments and other agencies really contributed to the success today.”

Those attending the event in the Home Depot parking lot brought their old, expired and unwanted medications for a Thatcher Police officer to dispose via incineration. Grimes said total weight of the medications collected will be determined early this week, but Thatcher officers were taking three large boxes full back for proper disposal.

Attendees also could gather information about services offered by the coalition, the House of Hope sober living facility, Recovery Angels volunteer support, the Safford City-Graham County Library, and could receive a free eye screening by the Safford Lions Club. Emergency services were represented by Thatcher Police and Graham County Sheriff’s Office, Thatcher Fire Department, and helicopter ambulance services LifeNet and AirEvac.
