Dedication Saturday for airport renaming

SAFFORD — More activity is happening at Safford Regional Airport-1LT Duane Spalsbury Field, starting this weekend.

The dedication for the renaming of the airport will take place Saturday, May 11, starting at 10 a.m. with a welcome by Mayor Richard Ortega and invocation by Vice Mayor Arnold Lopez.

Colors will be presented by the Safford Police Honor Guard and the Gila Valley Chorale will perform the national anthem.

Guest speaker for the event will be state Sen. Wendy Rogers, followed by presentation of a plaque with the new name and a certificate of recognition from U.S. Rep. Juan Ciscomani.

A reception will follow the formal ceremony.

Airport officials also announced they are accepting sponsorships for November’s Safford Air Show. More than 3,000 people attended last year’s Air Fair and more are expected this year.

Performers booked for this year’s Air Show include:

  • Pylon Aviation’s acrobatic helicopters
  • The Desert Rats Warbird Formation Team in their CJ-6 trainers
  • Aerial firefighting demonstrations by Western Pilot
  • Greg Sembower’s P-51D Mustang
  • The Warbird Fleet, including T-6 Texan, SNJ, T-28 and more

Plus there will be rides available in a historic Army Air Corps C-47 and a U.S. Army Cobra Attack helicopter.
