SAFFORD —  A new program to help residents learn how to grow their own vegetable gardens will begin this month.

The University of Arizona Cooperative Extension in Graham County is starting the Garden Plots program. Those who register will take a six-week course on growing vegetables in the Gila Valley’s climate as well as tending their own garden plots.

The classes will take place at the Safford Library Annex on Central Avenue, and the plots are located at the Cooperative Extension’s Safford Agricultural Center on Montierth Lane.

“And then they get to back to their neighborhoods and teach it, and someone new gets to come in and garden in the plots that we have,” said Cindy Pearson with the Cooperative Extension.

Classes will take place every Tuesday, at 10 a.m. and 5 p.m., starting June 10.
