Classes seek to help those leaving incarceration

SAFFORD — With both state and federal prison complexes in Graham County, the Gila Valley sees a number of prisoners released into the area.

How to help those prisoners transition into a law-abiding life is the goal the Graham County New Hope Re-entry Project put on by the Graham County Substance Abuse Coalition.

The Re-entry Project is hosting two training events next week, The first is a free community coach training class Tuesday, June 15, from 5:30-7:30 p.m., at Graham County Substance Abuse Coalition’s House of Hope.

The focus will be on helping volunteers mentor men and women upon their release from prison, helping them get identification, re-establishing their right to drive, helping them find housing and employment.

The second event is called Inmate to Citizen and will take place Wednesday, June 16, 5:30-7:30 p.m., at the House of Hope. This class focuses on the families and loved ones of those re-entering society.

“It gives them some of things to expect and identify with where these people are at,” said Re-entry Project Director Ken Gowin.
