Cedar Creek fire continues to grow, only 20% contained

SHOW LOW, AZ – The Cedar Creek fire, burning near Show Low has consumed nearly 36,000 acres and is only 20% contained.

Officials said Monday’s record heat and continued dry conditions resulted in “extreme fire behavior,” and the fire grew an approximate total of 14,000 acres during the day.

The community of Cedar Creek is the latest to be placed under pre-evacuation notice, joining the communities of Show Low, Pinetop-Lakeside, McNary and Hon-Dah. While evacuations have not been mandated in these towns, residents are advised to prepare.

To protect crews battling the blaze through the night and into today, the Navopache Electric Cooperative has powered down the lines to Cibecue, Cedar Creek and Carrizo.
