Carmen Pratt Shumway, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, age 86, completed her earthly journey of joy on June 22, 2021, in Bryce, Arizona. She was born as a twin on February 8, 1935, in El Paso, Texas to the late Harold Wilcken and Anna Hendrickson Pratt. Her signature positive and happy outlook was constant throughout life.
She graduated from Academia Juárez in Colonia Juárez, Mexico in 1952. She faithfully served missions for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in the Mexican Mission, Eugene Oregon, and Nauvoo Illinois. She received an elementary education degree from Brigham Young University.
She married her eternal companion, Lenn Minnerly Shumway on August 26, 1957. Together they were completely devoted to the tender care and nurture of their children. Their wisdom strengthened testimonies daily.
She taught and exemplified love of God by her undeterred faith. She taught elementary school and literacy in the community for many years. She taught a deep appreciation of country by leading and serving to improve the Town of Taylor through beautification and preservation of heritage. This legacy will influence countless generations. She was visionary in her understanding of life and people and labored lovingly to help lift and build confidence.
She was preceded in death by her husband and three children: Linda Carmen, Charles Lenn, and David Eldon, as well as her parents, one brother, and 4 sisters.
She is survived by six children: Gayle Bryce (Jim), Lee Shumway (Becky), Elaine Brantley (Tim), Brenda Lyman (Mark), Kendall Shumway (Tiffany), Sandra Greer (Doug): 29 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren and 4 sisters – Berta Whitney, Ramona Gale, Doratha Rae Young, and Kathleen Bigler.
Lenn and Carmen will be remembered in a memorial service on Friday, July 2nd at 11:00 AM. There will be a viewing for Carmen on Thursday, July 1st from 6:00 – 8:00 PM and also Friday, July 2nd at 10:00 AM. Both will be held at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Silver Creek Stake Center, 300 West Willow Lane, Taylor, Arizona. Interment will be held immediately following at the Taylor Cemetery.
