Carlos Madrid Ornelas, a beloved resident of Solomon, Arizona, and a proud United States Air Force veteran, passed away peacefully on Sunday, September 22, 2024, at the age of 93, surrounded by his family.
Carlos was born on May 31, 1931, to Patricio and Sorida Ornelas. From humble beginnings, he developed a strong sense of duty and love for family that shaped his entire life. After graduating from Solomon Junior High School, he worked hard to support his family, taking on various jobs before enlisting in the United States Air Force. His service would take him around the world, but it was during his time in the Air Force that Carlos met the love of his life, Miss Kate. They married on January 5, 1957, embarking on a lifelong journey of love and partnership that spanned 68 wonderful years.
Throughout his 23 years of military service, Carlos rose to the rank of Master Sergeant. He and Kate traveled the world with their four children, creating cherished memories wherever they were stationed. Among all their homes, Hickam Air Force Base in Hawaii held a special place in their hearts, a place filled with the warmth and aloha spirit they so loved. Carlos served his country with honor, and after retiring from the Air Force, he returned with his family to his roots in Solomon, Arizona.
Carlos began a second career with the Arizona Department of Corrections, serving with the same integrity and dedication for another 16 years. However, it was his role as a grandpa that truly defined the next chapter of his life. Carlos was known far and wide for his loving and caring nature, and his family often joked that he didn’t just become a grandfather to his own 12 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren, but to the entire community. Affectionately known as “Grandpa” to many, Carlos had an uncanny ability to make everyone feel like family.
A man of deep faith, Carlos was a devoted member of Victory Fellowship, and later at The Way Arizona, where he worshiped faithfully for the past 20 years. He lived by the values he held close: love, service, and devotion to his faith and family. His gentle wisdom, warm smile, and unshakable support were a constant presence in the lives of those around him. Whether it was through his church, his work, or simply in his quiet acts of kindness, Carlos touched countless lives and left an indelible mark on the community he loved.
Carlos is survived by his beloved wife of 68 years, Miss Kate Ornelas; his four children: George (Elvira), Chuck (Kim), Paul, and Fran (John); his brother Frank Ornelas; 12 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren. His family was his pride and joy, and he found great pleasure in watching his legacy grow through them. Carlos was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Manuel Ornelas, and his sister Hortencia De La Cruz.
Carlos leaves behind a legacy of love, kindness, and service to others. He will be remembered for his unwavering devotion to his family, his quiet strength, and his ability to make those around him feel loved and valued. His impact on his family and the community will be felt for generations to come, and he will be missed more than words can express.
Funeral services for Carlos will be conducted Monday, September 30, 2024, at 10:00 a.m., at Vining Funeral Home’s “Chapel of the Valley.” Military honors will be rendered by the Davis-Monthan Air Force Base Honor Guard, as Carlos is laid to rest at the Safford Cemetery.
