Safford, Ariz — As Coach Bob Park begins his 25th year at Safford High School, the Bulldogs are gearing up for an exciting season in the 3A South conference. With three decades of coaching experience, including a notable 25 years at Safford, Park is focused on building on last season’s foundation and turning narrow defeats into victories.
The Bulldogs concluded the previous season with a 4-6 record. Despite the overall standings, there were notable high points, including a significant win against Morenci and securing a playoff spot. These achievements have set a promising tone for the upcoming season. This year, the Bulldogs aim higher, emphasizing the importance of winning the close games that slipped away last season. The team’s overarching goal is to improve their win total by focusing on execution and reducing turnovers.
Key returning players include Collin Gunnett at linebacker, Zayden Sanchez at offensive guard, Micah Chaplin at linebacker, and Xavier Owens, who will contribute on both the offensive line and defensive end. These players are expected to provide a solid foundation of experience and skill. However, the team has also seen the departure of key players such as quarterback Jo Jo Ruelas, wide receiver and strong safety Chris Shatto, wide receiver and free safety Iziah Alvarado, and offensive and defensive lineman Brenden Aguliar.
Emerging talents to watch this season include Jace Jameson, who will play both linebacker and wide receiver, Carlos Arbizo at strong safety, Jevyn Elliott stepping into the quarterback role, and the versatile Xavier Owens. These players are anticipated to make significant contributions as they gain more game experience.
Offensively, the Bulldogs boast physical strength and speed, while their defensive strengths lie in their understanding of schemes and their overall speed. Special teams are highlighted by their speed and solid tackling. However, gaining more game experience remains a crucial area for improvement.
The coaching staff, led by Park, includes David David as offensive line coach and offensive coordinator, Brad Reynolds handling the defensive line, offensive line, and strength coaching, Jason Linden for the offensive and defensive lines, Michael Peterson overseeing quarterbacks, running backs, and special teams, Hunter Cochran as the JV head coach and running backs and linebackers coach, Doug Odum focusing on defensive backs and wide receivers, Clay Emery as the kicking coach, Tiffany Faunce as the strength coach, and Dr. Eliza Otis as the team’s athletic trainer.
In the 3A South conference, every game holds significance, and the Bulldogs are prepared for intense competition, viewing each matchup as a rivalry. Coach Park’s philosophy centers on commitment, class, daily improvement, and maintaining a positive attitude.
