Betty Leora (Newbold) Barney

Betty Leora (Newbold) Barney, of Safford, (Artesia area), Arizona, aged 93 passed away peacefully on the evening of the 5th of April 2024, in her daughter, Karla’s, home with loved ones by her side.

She was born on 23 October 1930 in Murray, Salt Lake, UT, to Dorrel Allen and Connie Leora (Dansie) Newbold of Riverton, UT. Betty grew up in Riverton. At the age of 18, she married Elvin Orin Barney of Safford, AZ, on 22 June 1949, in the Salt Lake Temple. Betty and Elvin made their home in Riverton UT. They were the parents of 7 children; 4 sons and 3 daughters. The last two children were twins, a boy, Kyle, and a girl, Karla. This completed their family and they were so happy.

In May of 1981 Betty, Elvin, and their 3 youngest children moved to AZ where they could be closer to Elvin’s family and help his aging mother. It wasn’t easy for them to leave their other children, grandchildren, extended family, and friends. Betty loved her husband and supported him in this change. All their children accepted it, but it wasn’t easy for any of them. Kyle returned to Riverton staying with his brother Lee until he was able to be on his own. He has remained in UT making it his home with his family. Betty grew to love Arizona and made it her home, as did Tamara and Karla.

Betty is a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and has faithfully served in all the callings that she received. She and Elvin took their children to church with them and taught the gospel in their home by word and example. Betty loved to go to the Temple whenever she could. She has written personal Family History Stories including those of her siblings and herself. These stories will be a great benefit to her posterity as they read and learn about her life experiences shared therein. Betty will be greatly missed by all those who had the privilege to know and love her.

Her survivors are: daughter-in-law, Carole Rae (Sutherland) Barney; and daughters, Connie Sue (married to Sherman Hal) Lloyd and Karla Elizabeth (married to James Ernest “Buster”) Smith; her sons, Boyd Dorrel ( married to Crystal Ann Wiggins) Barney, Lee Orin (married to Kristi Dettamanti) Barney, Kyle Elbridge (married to Patty Cotcamp) Barney; and son-in-law, Harold Damian Fowler; 25 grandchildren, 47 great-grandchildren and 13 great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by: her parents, Dorrel and Connie Newbold; husband, Elvin Orin Barney; older brother, Robert Dorrel “Bob” Newbold; great-grandson, Peter Blake; daughter, Tamara (Barney) Fowler; granddaughter, Katy Damiana Fowler; son, Brent Elvin Barney; and her younger sister, Naola Connie (Newbold) Holt.

The family would like to extend a special thanks to Karla and Buster Smith for moving in with her so she would be comfortable. Then sharing their home with her and making sure she was taken care of until the very end, with the support of their family. We would also like to thank “Haven Home Health and Hospice” staff, who have helped our Mom, “Betty” through this difficult time in her life, and Vining Funeral Home for the great support they have extended in these difficult days after her passing.

Funeral services for Betty were conducted Saturday, April 13, 2024, at 2:00 p.m., at the Mt. Graham Chapel of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints by Bishop Jonathon Stailey of the Artesia Ward. Concluding services followed in the Safford Cemetery.
