SAFFORD —After just three months into a new job, Denise Benton was elevated to head the organization.

The governing board for the United Way of Graham and Greenlee Counties selected Benton to be the organization’s new executive director, effective May 15.

Benton was hired to be the organization’s grants manager in February, just weeks before the resignation of CEO Adam O’Doherty.

Benton holds a bachelor’s degree in education and retired in November of 2021 after 21 years of federal service. She previously served as a member of the United Way of Graham and Greenlee Counties board of directors from 2020 to 2021.

“It is my honor to serve Graham and Greenlee counties as executive director for our organization,” Benton said in a prepared release. “Without our donors, we cannot be a part of all of the great things the nonprofit organizations and educators are doing in our communities. Thank you to Freeport-McMoRan, the Freeport employees, the City of Safford, and all of our donors. We are only the stewards of these funds and could not do what we do without your generosity.”
