Arizona launches compelling naloxone campaign to combat opioid overdose crisis

PHOENIX — Today the Arizona Department of Health Services (ADHS) launched a naloxone campaign aimed at combating Arizona’s opioid overdose crisis. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved medication, also known by the trade name Narcan, can rapidly reverse opioid overdoses. Every day, five Arizonans die from an opioid overdose.

This multi-media campaign features powerful stories from a diverse group of Arizonans whose lives were impacted by naloxone. The campaign connects those with substance use disorder to support resources and shows all Arizonans how they can use naloxone to save lives.

“In the last five years police officers, emergency medical technicians, and first responders across Arizona have responded to 42,663 suspected opioid overdoses. It is imperative that all communities have access to this life-saving measure,” said Jennie Cunico, ADHS Cabinet Executive Officer.

ADHS offers free and confidential opioid advice from certified medical experts 24/7 at the Opioid Assistance and Referral Line (1-888-688-4222). This critical resource offers information about opioid medicines and side effects, long-term pain management,  opioid withdrawal symptoms, and recovery resources. In Arizona, efforts to increase naloxone accessibility extend beyond traditional avenues. The FDA-approved injectable and nasal spray formulations are available over the counter, at pharmacies, community-based distribution programs, and through local health departments, making it possible for the public to also utilize naloxone to save lives.

“The only reason I’m breathing here today is because of naloxone,” said Nick Baker, a survivor of an overdose, who is featured in the campaign. If you need naloxone for yourself, a family member, or friend, you can get it without a prescription at your local pharmacy.
