THATCHER — A major road improvement is coming to Thatcher, thanks to funding from the state.

Thatcher Town Manager Heath Brown said Wednesday the town has been approved for $4.5 million for the reconstruction of 8th Street, between 1st and 20th avenues.

The plan is to turn 8th Street into a three-lane roadway, with curbs and sidewalks. There will also be new crossings at the canal and the railroad tracks.

“This is very exciting news for us,” Brown said in an e-mail. “Thank you to (Town Engineer) Tom Palmer for his vision on the project, and hard work getting the project and application submitted to the state.”

Brown said he anticipates a quick timeline on the construction, with design and right-of-way acquisition the first priorities.
