Alma Verdell Howard, 85, a lifelong resident of Thatcher passed away Tuesday July 21, 2015, at his home. Verdell was a lifelong farmer in the Gila Valley and was well respected for his farming skills.
Verdell was born July 19, 1930, in Hubbard to Enos and Amy Bryce Howard. He attended school in Thatcher, graduating in the class of ’49.
Later in life he served on the Thatcher Town Council for 25 years, was a member of the Board of Directors of the former Eastern Arizona Bank and also Stockman’s Bank, was President of the Graham County Canal Board, and a partner in the Quail Ridge Development. Verdell was active in his church, serving as the Sunday School President and later as the First Councilor in the Thatcher Third Ward Bishopric.
Verdell was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He is preceded in death by his grandson, Jeremy Curtis, two sisters, Wanda Moody and Mavis and a brother, Zenos Howard.
He leaves behind his sweet wife, Nelda Howard, three daughters, Diane (Jay) Layton, Marla (James) Wright, and Pam Curtis, as well as 15 grandchildren and 36 great-grandchildren.
A public viewing and visitation will be held Monday July 27 from 3 to 5 PM at the Howard Residence, 3177 W. 1st Street, Thatcher AZ. The family will hold a private service at a different time.
