ADOT rolling out new safe driving campaign in September

PHOENIX — Arizona Department of Transportation is updating its Highway Safety Plan, and it’s putting the onus on drivers.

ADOT is getting to roll out a new safety campaign as part of its updated plan.

“The campaign is called ‘There’s no such thing as accidents,’ ” said Jennifer Toth, ADOT director. “It’s focused on ways people can make good decisions behind the wheel, so that everyone gets home.”

She said that driver behavior is a factor in more than 90 percent of crashes in the state.

“That’s drivers choosing to drive impaired, choosing to speed and choosing to drive unrestrained. Those are all choices and they often lead to fatal crashes,” Toth said.

Because behavior is a choice, ADOT is encouraging people to stop using the word “accident” when describing a crash.

To encourage safe behavior behind the wheel, Toth said ADOT will soon be rolling out a major marketing campaign, including radio, TV, social media and digital advertising, with targeted advertising in restaurants and at sporting events.

The campaign will begin in September.

The Highway Safety Plan was previously updated in 2023.
