A+ marks for Safford in financial audit

SAFFORD — While some communities in Graham and Greenlee counties have struggled in the past with maintaining good financial practices, the opposite is true for the City of Safford.

At Monday’s meeting the City Council will hear from the financial auditing firm of Baker Tilly, who report the city had no material financial weaknesses and no significant deficiencies. Therefore, the auditing firm is recommending the city stay the course in how it’s handling its finances.

Highlights of the audit show the city kept expenditures to 25 percent of the limitation allowed under state statute. And, under Arizona Department of Environmental Quality regulations, both cash to expenditure and debt to expenditure ratios meet requirement.

In its government-type funds, the city has about three times the assets to liabilities, and in business-type funds, the city has more than five times the assets to liabilities.

Also on Monday’s agenda, the council will be asked to select a vice mayor; and appoint council members to represent the city as ex-officio members of 11 different organizations, including the boards of the Boys & Girls Club of the Gila Valley, Mt. Graham Safe House, Safford Downtown Association, the Graham County Chamber of Commerce and the Pride of Safford among others.

The City Council meeting the library’s programming room Monday at 6 p.m. The meeting will also be streamed live on the city’s YouTube channel.
