Safford Police Investigate Crashes, Domestic Incident and Overnight Medical Emergency
The Safford Police Department responded to 30 reported incidents between the morning of September 16 and September 17, including multiple traffic-related calls, a domestic violence report, a juvenile disturbance and an overnight medical emergency.
At approximately 11:12 a.m. Wednesday, officers responded to a motor vehicle accident involving a blue Toyota and another vehicle. The report states the driver of the Toyota initially remained inside the vehicle, with airbags deployed. A small SUV and four-door sedan were later requested for removal, and the roadway was reported clear by 11:38 a.m.
A separate injury accident was reported at approximately 7:02 p.m. A red Nissan Sentra was struck by a white Hyundai Elantra, which left the scene. The driver of the Sentra followed the Hyundai in an attempt to obtain its license plate. The report states the Hyundai had front-end damage, while a passenger in the Sentra struck their face on the dashboard but declined medical assistance.
Police also responded to a juvenile-related incident at approximately 5:32 p.m. The report states that a person was chasing the reporting party’s son with a knife following an argument.
Later Wednesday night, at approximately 10:09 p.m., an officer was flagged down by a woman reporting a domestic violence incident in Solomon. According to the report, the woman said the suspect had acted violently, taken her phone to prevent her from calling 911, and damaged her truck while she attempted to leave. She was able to get away from the suspect.
The department also handled a welfare check after dispatchers heard a woman screaming before a phone call disconnected. The caller subsequently declined to speak with dispatch, and officers noted there was no previous history with the person in the department’s records.
The most serious call in the report came shortly after 2:35 a.m. Thursday, when officers responded to a medical emergency involving a man found between bushes. Initial reports indicated he was unconscious and possibly not breathing. Officers were unable to perform CPR because the man was trapped underneath the bush. The report later documents a request for Caldwell’s assistance, but it does not state the man’s medical outcome.
Other calls included school patrols, traffic hazards, criminal damage, found property, alarms, civil standby requests, order-of-protection service, a private-property accident, a report of a missing dog and several traffic stops.
